Lifestyle, Beauty and Fashion thoughts...

So, it's that time of year again, Halloween has come back around, and if you are anything like me you may not have any clue what you are going to dress up as this year.

I do this every year, and after each year I decide that the next year I will be super organised and have a great costume idea for next Halloween...

But unfortunately, it never really works out that way. Usually I get distracted by something else or I haven't got the funds for an amazing Halloween costume or, like this year, I am working and I can't be bothered going all out for a costume to wear to work(running around a bar all night in some elaborate costume does not appeal to me at all!).

So, I have decided to do a series of blog posts with quick, last minute makeup looks that you can totally pull of this Halloween! Because personally, I think if you have a good makeup look, it looks like you've went to waaaayy more effort than you actually have!

For this blog post, I have decided to show you how I create a scary skull makeup look(I say scary because I am a wimp and this is probably the scariest of all the makeup looks I will be doing!). I really like this look because you can either go for a full face skull, or you could just do half a face and do the other half really glam, which I think looks lovely too!

This is the same look that I tried out a few weeks ago, just on half of my face, using the exact same technique in this post. I put more detail into this one because I feel with the whole face, it would have just been a bit too much.

So let's get going!
I started with a clean, moisturised face(my skin is having a slight breakdown this week, so excuse me looking like death already!).

The makeup I've used for this look is the Snazaroo classic face paints in Black and White, a black Topshop eyeliner and a Black Urban Decay eyeshadow. In all this is a pretty simple look to do, the most difficult part(in my opinion), is trying to get the jaw/teeth right. But it doesn't need to be perfect! So don't stress out too much, practice makes perfect!

Starting with the white face paint and a wet foundation brush, I placed the paint all over my face, making sure I had a good coverage, I also used an old beauty blender just to push the face paint into the skin.

Once I had covered my whole face and the paint had dried in, I took my eyeliner pencil and roughly drew in the areas of my face that I wanted to have detail. Don't worry, at this stage it can be really rough, you don't need to worry about the detail until a little while later! You are just trying to get the feel for it just now.

As you can see, I have done a really rough outline around the areas that I want to have some detail.
So, around my eye sockets, my temples, where my nose would be, along my cheekbones and I have roughly drawn in my teeth-although these do change slightly because drawing teeth is hard!

Next, I just fill in the areas that I want to block colour black, so my eye sockets, temples and nose. I have also very lightly outlined the hollows of my cheeks and the space between my upper and lower sets of teeth.

From this stage onwards, you can begin to visualise how you want your skull to look and it does make it slightly easier. Next I took a very tiny paintbrush, and with the black paint I decided on the outline of my teeth, but don't panic if you mess up at this stage, it's still fixable! I also took my eyeliner and filled in my water line and just underneath to blend my eyes in, making sure there was no flesh tones visible.

Now, the teeth are really tricky, so they are probably the area that you want to spend the most time on. But let's face it, they don't have to look exactly like real teeth! Unless you are a dentist or something, I don't think you need to worry to much about it, it's just for fun after all!

After you have roughly decided where you want your teeth to go, I went back in with my black paint brush and shaded the areas around each tooth, again, this is where you can really determine the shape of them and how you want them to look. Once you have decided exactly where they are going and you have shaded around them, just take you white paint and go over each tooth, just to enhance the whiteness of them.

I then took my black eyeshadow on a fluffy brush and blended it out around my black paint, just to soften the look a little, but to also darken the face paint and make it more intense.

I then took a very fine paint brush and painted in some cracks around the face wherever I felt it was necessary. It just gives the look some extra definition. Like I said at the beginning, I didn't add as much detail to the whole face makeup(as opposed to the half face), purely because I think it would be too much to look at on the whole face, I personally don't think it needs it, however you can add as much or as little as you like! It's your face after all!

And there you have it! A pretty simple(except for those pesky teeth!) last minute makeup look for your Halloween!

You could pop in some creepy contact lenses to go with it(I need actual contacts to see so I can't use them), but if you do, just remember to make sure they are actually safe for your eyes! You should always check who you buy them from, if it isn't from an authorised optician, it's probably best to stay away from them, your eyes are way to valuable to damage permanently for one night of fun!

I hope you like this look and find it an easy, quick alternative route if you've left the planning to last minute! Everything I used is easily found in the shops and pretty affordable. I got my face paints and brushes from Amazon for less than £10!

Here's a few extra pictures... My cat doesn't look convinced by this, but I hope you are!

Let my know if you try the look out for yourself and if you have any questions about this look! I will be posting more last minute looks this week.

This weekend I got to do one of the most fun Autumnal activities possible! I have wanted to go to a pumpkin patch for longer than I can remember, it's just such a quintessential American thing to do! But sadly, not something that you often find here in the UK(or at least not to my knowledge).

Luckily though, in the UK, a lot of American traditions are starting to catch on(although it often takes a while for them to make their way to Scotland), and at long last the pumpkin patch has become one of those things!

A little while back, I saw on Facebook a page advertising a Pumpkin Patch on a farm 45 minutes outside of Glasgow called Arnprior Farm, and this was the best new ever!

Opening day was last Saturday and my mum and I made sure we were there for opening at 10am. And it's just as well, because they were already busier than they had expected, they were having to use one of their fields as an overspill carpark.

When we got up to the patch, there was the lovely farmer(I'm presuming from the signs, that his name was Duncan) and his wife with their beautiful baby, that were directing everybody, chatting to people, answering any questions, with Duncan helping everyone he could to carry their pumpkins back to their cars,  it was just a lovely, friendly atmosphere that made everybody feel really welcome!

The pumpkin patch itself has been designed so lovingly, it's really family friendly and is just picture perfect. Genuinely, it is just as cute as you think it will be. There are hand painted signs telling you all about how the pumpkin patch started(which I presume was for the kids, but I appreciated them too!), photogenic hay bales and signs, handmade kids games(I think giant chess maybe?), you could tell a lot of thought had gone into this place.

The pumpkins are amazing, the have loads of different sizes, we bought a small one, a medium on and two extremely large pumpkins that are honestly the most giant pumpkins that I have ever seen in my life! They look like they should be turned into Cinderella's carriage! Altogether it cost £28, which I know, does seem a bit on the expensive side when you can get pumpkins at Morrisons for £1.50.

However, this is about the whole experience, it's a small family business, of which you can tell there has been a lot of hard work and care put into. And this is a venture that up until August, nobody could have known if all that hard work was actually going to pay off(and it certainly did!).

I think it's nice to support local businesses and I think for the experience that we had, it actually wasn't that expensive(bearing in mind that we did go a bit overboard buying 4 pumpkins, you don't need to do that!).

And obviously everybody else was thinking the same because the place was ridiculously busy all day and by 3pm on the Sunday they had sold out of all their pumpkins! They had to source pumpkins from elsewhere just so they can open up again this Saturday!

I just think it's great, Duncan was telling us(whilst very kindly carrying our VERY heavy pumpkins back to our car for us, saving me a few trips back and forth!), that the whole idea had started off as a joke between him and his wife, and just look at the success they had with it! I'm sure when they started it, not even they could have predicted that success!

So I would like to say a huge thank you to the family run pumpkin patch at Arnprior farm because they gave us and everybody else there a really great morning out on a beautifully sunny, crisp Autumn day and have hopefully started a lovely annual Autumn tradition in this family!

I really hope they continue to do this every year, because it really was so much fun!
Wishing them lots of good luck with this great venture and well done for bringing it to us, I greatly appreciate that!

Yep, I am so aware that I have went a bit crazy with the pumpkins this year, I clearly have an obsession(not all of these are from Arnprior, just the two giant ones, the one next to them and the second one in at the front), and I'm not even sorry about it!

If you are nearby this area(and have a car to get you there), you really should drop by this place, I
can't recommend it enough! But remember to get there early and bring your wellies! It is a farm after all!

I hope you all enjoy the pictures and the post(I will get back to more beauty things soon, but I couldn't not do a post about this place) and I hope that you are having a great October!

We can't wait to get carving these mammoth pumpkins, I will upload photos of that very soon!

This week I'm sharing my favourite brownie recipe with everyone.

I took inspiration for this from a bbcgoodfood.com a few months ago and I have just tweaked it myself over time to suit my preferences.

These salted caramel brownies are such a lovely treat and give you a warm fuzzy feeling of cosiness, now that we are entering the chillier autumn/winter season.

I absolutely love these brownies and I have had approval from quite a few friends, luckily, they are very willing taste testers!

These brownies are quite a bit of work and you will require an electric mixer(if you don't have one, then you are going to need some serious arm muscles to get through this!), I only have a cheapy little electric mixer from Morrisons that cost me around £8/£10 and it does the job perfectly! If you have a stand mixer you are very lucky and this shouldn't be anywhere near as strenuous(Cafe Latte KitchenAid Artisan Mixer= Life Goals!).

They are really indulgent and are perfect for sharing at sleepovers, movie nights or any friendly get together. They should last about 2 weeks in an airtight container or you can freeze them and they should keep up to a month, so you can definitely bake them in advance!

The ingredients you will need for this recipe are:

185g of unsalted butter
185g of good quality dark chocolate
40g of cocoa powder
85g of plain flour
275g of caster sugar
3 eggs
Salted caramel sauce(or you could make your own salted caramel- I did not do this, I went with Marks and Spencer's finest ready made one)
100g of any chocolate you like(I like to use Galaxy Caramel Collections Salted Caramel chocolate, it's soooo good! But you can use anything you like, you could even use half milk/half white chocolate)
Some icing sugar and salt flakes(both of which are totally optional).

Once you have all your ingredients together, pre-heat your oven to 180C(160C for a fan assisted oven) or gas mark 4.

First thing you want to do is melt your dark chocolate and your butter together. You can either do this on the stove, in a glass bowl, over a pan of boiling water(making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn't touch the water) and just keep stirring that until it has melted together. Or you can stick it in a microwavable bowl and pop it in the microwave for about a minute and a half(but keep checking it every 20 seconds and giving it a little stir).

Once you have melted your butter and dark chocolate successfully and it's looking all delicious and tasty, set it to one side and allow it to cool down to room temperature.

You now need to get to work with your eggs and sugar(this is where the electric whisk comes in to play).

Crack your eggs into a large bowl and add all of your sugar. With your electric whisk on full speed, whisk the two together until it becomes really thick and creamy. It will become very pale and about double its original volume. This can take a little while, it just depends on how fast your mixer is. For me it takes about 7 minutes, don't give up! you will get there! It's done when it starts to look a bit like a cross between melted ice cream and a milkshake. It's kind of like an eggy mousse.

Now thats done, you need to add your cooled chocolate/butter mixture into your sugar and eggs(it must be cooled or it will start to cook the egg).
You need to do this carefully, by folding in the chocolate with a plastic spatula, try doing this in a slow figure of 8, folding it under and around itself, making sure it is all mixed through. If you just mix it in too quickly, you will knock all the air out of your eggy mousse and you will have wasted all your hard work.

The mixture should become a deep brown colour.

The next step is to add your flour and cocoa powder(put both of these in the sieve at the same time and tap and shake it over your mixture to ensure that it doesn't have any lumps).

As before, gently fold your flour into the mixture in a figure of 8, slowly to reduce the air knocking out of the mixture.

It will look very dry and you'll think I'm crazy but be patient and carry on, it will turn into a fudgy mixture.

Make sure you don't over-mix it, otherwise your brownies will turn out really dense.

Now pop in your chocolate of choice and mix that through.

Line a tin with greaseproof paper(I also rub a little butter over the tin, not really sure why, but I always do it, I find it helps the paper stick to the tin, making it less awkward to manoeuvre).
Now pour half of your mixture into the tin and spread it evenly across. Try to make sure you have a good helping of your chocolate in this section.

Once you've done this, it's time to bring in the salted caramel(omnomnomnom). Take a teaspoon at a time and pop little chunks of your salted caramel across your mixture(you can do this any way you like, I just pop it across randomly, wherever I can find a space), you can put as much or as little as you like, this is all about preference. But in my eyes, the more the better! I then also like to add a little sprinkling of extra salt flakes across each helping of caramel, but you don't need to do this.

Once you are happy with your caramel distribution, pour the rest of your brownie mix on top and even it out with your spatula.

Now you just need to pop your tin into the middle shelf of your pre-heated oven.

You will need to leave your brownie in there for about 20-25 mins, or until the brownie doesn't wobble on top when you give it a little shake. If it does wobble, it's not done yet, pop it in for another 5 mins and make sure you have a shiny top and the the brownie is just coming away from the sides of your tin.

Once your brownie is done, bring it out of the oven and leave it in the tin until it has COMPLETELY cooled, this is genuinely the most difficult part because it smells amazing and your inner child will want to eat it straight away, but DON'T DO IT!

Once your brownie has completely cooled, bring it out of your tin and cut it into little squares(trust me, these are so rich and indulgent you don't want to make them too big, because they will just go to waste), then give them a light dusting of icing sugar for presentation.

And now you can dig in! These are amazing with a nice glass of cold milk or the perfect accompaniment with a lovely cup of tea!

I hope you enjoy this recipe and find it easy to follow!

I love making these brownies and experimenting with different flavours to put in them. Please let me know if you give them a go yourself or if you have any questions.

Love,
